MÉTAMORPHOSES

I'm happy to share this new theatrical poster I designed and illustrated for the release of Christophe Honoré's new film MÉTAMORPHOSES. Below is another snap of the poster, just sent to me by Christophe, in an alternate wide version for French theatres and subways. Look for the film in France and around the world this year.

MARC BOUTAVANT

Marc Boutavant makes art that appeals to many things I love-- characters, cuteness, great handwritten script, French stuff, animals and travel-- and you can explore his fantastic worlds in his books currently in reprint like Around the World with Mouk, his use of color is playful and beautiful, his characters are iconic (think Richard Scary but French), and his books are great for kids. Love him, can't get enough. Unfortunately the new pressing of the above title doesn't come with the original French words as Boutavant wrote them into the illustrations, BUT it does come with a sheet of cute stickers. ALEXANDER GIRARD

To anyone checking in -- sorry for the lack of posts the past week or two. I've suddenly had a handful of amazing projects fall into my lap and haven't had much free time to post. Many cool things to be announced soon, so do check back.

I'm currently wrapping up a wedding invitation for a good friend of mine, and I'll be letterpressing the invites with the great Bryce McCloud of Isle of Printing -- one of Nashville's true treasures and a print-lover's pleasure dome. One of my biggest inspirations for the design was the work of the late, great Alexander Girard, specifically the layout of this menu design I've translated for the invite. I just love everything Girard, and thankfully House Industries does to, and has released the finest collection of Girard products imaginable: a typeface, custom 3d letters, a wooden nativity scene, cloth dolls, an animal puzzle, a memory game, and a set of children's blocks. THE FILM POSTERS OF JACQUES TATI

As research for a project I'm working on, I wanted to take a look back at the many wonderful posters designed for the films of Jacques Tati, the French art-comedy genius whose work has been made available to us on DVD here in the States by The Criterion Collection. I love the giant bold fields of color, the hand-painted lettering, and the playful caricature shared by them all. I've credited the artist when known; the masterful one-sheet for Mon Oncle seen above was designed by Pierre Étaix, a friend of Tati's who then went on to direct films of his own that have remained unavailable and unreleased despite great critical acclaim (a petition supporting the restoration of these prints includes the signiature of Jean-Luc Godard among others). Any of these beautiful originals are well worth the pretty penny you'll find them listed for online. One day when I'm rich and famous, one of these will adorn my wall.
